On a gentle coastal hill between Capo Trionto and Punta Alice, Cariati commands long views over the Ionian Sea. This is a Byzantine borgo, its medieval layout shaped by defence and prospect. The landscape here is deceptive: near the coast, soft, rolling hills give way inland to rougher terrain cut by seasonal streams, the most substantial being the Fiume Nicà, which marks the provincial boundary.

The old town is a study in levels and vistas. At the Torrione Spezieria, the gaze sweeps the entire coastline. More intimate is the Rione Valle, where steep, narrow alleys drop towards the lower town; here the Torrione Valle offers a framed view of sea and rooftops. From Piazzetta Marconi, known locally as ‘the Bridge’, you can trace the circuit of walls and towers, and take in the sweep of Cariati Marina below. A place where the Byzantine instinct for a defensible hilltop meets a very Italian love of a good panorama.
