centro storico, collinare, difensivo, Calopezzati

On a modest hilltop above the Ionian coast, Calopezzati follows its ridge northeastward, a small defensive borgo with origins in the Byzantine era. The surrounding landscape is a soft, cultivated roll of olive groves, with vegetation gathering only in the valleys along the watercourses. The Trionto river, rising in the Sila Greca, marks the northern boundary; closer still, the Torrente Fiumarella and its tributary the Malanico run at the foot of the hill’s north-western slope.

The feudal castle began as a 10th-century Byzantine rocca, built for defence and lookout. Under the Normans and Swabians it was reinforced into a severe quadrilateral fortress, its form still legible today. Later, in the Angevin period, four corner towers were added, and early 15th-century restorations followed. The result is a palimpsest of medieval military architecture, quietly commanding a landscape that has changed far less than the stonework.
