Porta Bari, once known as Porta de Bari, was a principal gateway in the defensive walls of Altamura, a hilltop town in the region of Apulia. The city walls, which once enclosed the historic centre, were dismantled during the 19th century, as advances in military technology rendered them obsolete for defence. This fate was common to many European cities at the time. Porta Bari now stands as a remnant of that former fortification, a stone archway marking the old entrance to the town. Its survival offers a tangible link to Altamura’s medieval and early modern past, before the walls were cleared to make way for urban expansion.
