centro storico, collinare, concentrico, difensivo, Postiglione, Postilionis (denominazione storica)

From above, the historic centre of Postiglione resolves into a tangle of alleys and houses clustering around a Norman castle that crowns the summit. Built around the year 1000, this strategic fortification was long contested; its system of defences revolves around a main body, once equipped with six towers, one giving access to a prison, another with stairs for carriages. During the world wars it served as a military jail, later a museum; today the view takes in the Gulf of Salerno, the Cilento National Park, the Vallo di Diano, the Alburni mountains, both the Cilentan and Amalfitan coasts, and Capri.

Other architectural witnesses survive: the church of San Giorgio, a Latin cross without transept; the slender 14th-century campanile of San Nicola, all that remains after the 1857 earthquakes, built in white Alburni stone. The Sanctuary of the SS. Annunziata and Carmelite monastery date from the 16th century, and the chapel of San Rocco from the 17th, raised by survivors of the 1656 cholera epidemic.
