On a steep hill in the Campania interior, Oliveto Citra, formerly simply Oliveto, is a medieval borgo of the Norman period, its urban fabric still legible after centuries. The historic centre clusters tightly around the castle, a defensive rocca that dominates the skyline. Narrow lanes, mostly stepped, become extensions of the domestic realm, a common feature of small Southern Italian hill towns. These alleyways coil upwards towards the castle and the mother church, linking a series of small, steep piazzas, each with its own character, into a single, inseparable urban knot. The eastern part of the town retains traditional two-storey houses, irregular in plan, while loggias, roofs, and external staircases create a chorus of minor architectural details. The whole layout seems a deliberate preparation for the castle’s approach. Among other notable structures are the bell tower, the clock tower, and the church of San Giacomo Apostolo, of noble origin. Despite later Renaissance and Neoclassical finishes, the medieval core remains the true centre of activity.
