In the Calabrian hills, Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte presents a medieval borgo with two distinct personalities. The older quarter, called “Paese Vecchio”, grew organically around the year 1000, its irregular street pattern and rebuilt stone-and-brick houses a testament to centuries of seismic upheaval. Here, the Chiesa del SS. Rosario forms the ancient heart, while wrought-iron balconies and stone corbels lend a rugged grace to ordinary masonry facades.

Above it, the “rione Petto” tells a different story. Laid out after the devastating earthquake of 1783, this neighbourhood adopted a more orderly, grid-like plan. Its two-storey buildings, still with tiled roofs and fine ironwork, represent a rational rebuilding impulse, a cautious step towards symmetry after catastrophe.

The juxtaposition is subtle but telling: a slow, tectonic shift from medieval irregularity to Enlightenment geometry, etched into the very stones of this agricultural hill town.
