Morano Calabro

A medieval map etched in stone. This hilltop town clings to its rocky spur with the tenacity of a fortress, its buildings rising in tight terraces connected by steep, narrow alleys. At the summit, the skeletal remains of the castle recall the original settlement; from there, the town grew downwards, each expansion swallowing and rebuilding the previous defensive walls. The traces of three such circuits remain, visible in house foundations and towers now absorbed into the fabric of the town. Several ancient gates still stand: Porta San Nicola, Porta dell’Orto, and others named for the palaces and trades they once served. The neighbourhoods themselves preserve the names of medieval guilds, while the occasional building betrays a Jewish influence in its ground-plan, a legacy echoed in the local toponym ‘Giudecca’. The name ‘Morano’ itself remains uncertain, perhaps from the Moors, or from the mulberry tree.
