Gravina in Puglia, a historic centre in the province of Bari, resists neat classification. Its urban layout is an eclectic composite of districts, each shaped by successive waves of habitation. The medieval quarters in particular are not merely streets and buildings, but branching cave systems, carved into the soft limestone by the region’s characteristic karst ravines. These grottoes, re-used as homes, offered the townspeople a rough but secure refuge from incursions.

The town sits on the border between Puglia and Basilicata, a strategic position that has long made it a nodal point linking Adriatic towns with the interior of Lucania. Its geography was further defined by the tratturi, the grassy drove roads used for moving flocks. The royal Castellaneta-Melfi route, a wide modern-era track, here follows the line of a Roman predecessor, connecting the Ionian coast to the Vulture area and, further west, to Campania. This is a place where geology, history and transhumance have left their marks in stone and earth.
