centro storico, agricolo, produttivo, difensivo, Putignano, Locus pautiniano (denominazione storica, X secolo)

Putignano’s historic centre is a compact, purposeful place. Its ancient core, the locus pautiniano of tenth-century records, was shaped by natural and man-made boundaries: roads, older quarters, the lie of the land. This was a working settlement, not a picturesque afterthought: its streets held homes, workshops, places of worship, and the everyday business of agriculture and craft.

The town itself sits on three low hills, a position that once offered both prospect and defence. The medieval quarter grew around a Romanesque mother church and a castle, the latter now largely absorbed into later palazzi, though a semicircular tower remains in the fabric. A new ring of walls was added in the late fifteenth century, a sign of ongoing strategic concern. The centre’s layout is radiocentric, spreading outward from its early medieval nucleus, a pattern common to many fortified borghi of the region. Putignano is agricultural and industrial in origin, with roots in the ancient Peucetian settlement, evidenced by tombs found in the surrounding countryside.
