Monopoli is a workaday port town with a modern grid of wide, straight streets, a nineteenth-century plan that sits in clear contrast to its older, medieval core. The historic centre, still enclosed by Aragonese fortifications, juts into the sea: here, old buildings face directly onto the quays, and the sense of a medieval Apulian waterfront remains tangibly intact. The port itself meanders into the town like an inlet. Monopoli was a vigorous maritime city under Byzantine and Norman rule, its strategic position making it a target for pirates and invaders. For centuries it was the chief oil-exporting centre of the Kingdom of Naples. Today, it is a productive, agricultural and fishing hub, its functions, residential, artisanal, commercial, still woven into a fabric shaped by natural and man-made boundaries. The town probably stands on an ancient Daunian settlement, and was reportedly repopulated by refugees from the ruined Egnazia. It has been a bishopric since the eleventh century.
