The old centre of this medieval hill town retains its defensive character, clustered on a rocky spur above the surrounding farmland. The ruins of a Norman castle, rebuilt in the fourteenth century before successive earthquakes took their toll, still preside over the site. The historic core is unusually complete, its varied topography reflecting centuries of piecemeal expansion.

Among the surviving ecclesiastical buildings are the church of Santa Maria del Latini, a three-aisled basilica with a rectangular presbytery, and the single-nave church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie. Both are typical of the region’s medieval and early modern religious architecture.

The settlement was once the seat of an extensive Norman county, later passing through several noble families before becoming a district capital under French rule, a status confirmed by the Bourbons. The seismic history is sobering: catastrophic earthquakes in 1659, 1783 and 1791 caused widespread destruction, while later shocks in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries continued to damage the fabric of the town.
