Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta is a church of plain-spoken dignity, built to a rectangular plan with three aisles that end in three apses. The whole is constructed from cut stone and mixed rubble masonry, the aisles divided by two rows of seven rectangular piers. Open timber trusses roof the nave, though the last bay of the left aisle is vaulted with ribbed cross-vaulting. In a niche secured by an iron gate stands the baptismal font; nearby, between chapel entrances, sit two wooden confessionals. The right aisle holds a wooden crucifix and a carved stone sarcophagus. The presbytery, raised by a tufa step clad in marble, is vaulted and opens externally through a square-plan tiburio under its own roof. The architecture is robust, functional, and unadorned, a space built for worship, not display.
