Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta presents a sober limestone façade, its three portals carved from calcareous blocks. Inside, the basilican plan unfolds across three naves divided by pillars, their surfaces bearing the restorations and decorative handiwork of painters Zimmatore and Grillo, completed between 1916 and 1918. To the right of the entrance stands a marble baptismal font from the sixteenth century. The sacrament chapel contains a sixteenth-century Neapolitan altarpiece, a marble dossal with relief and crowning ornament, accompanied by small cinquecento statuettes; a canvas by D. Basile from 1770 is also housed here. In the chapel of Saint Agazio, two sixteenth-century panel doors depict Saints Agazio and Gregory, with angelic figures within. A copy of a half-bust sculpture of the patron saint resides here; the marble altar is the work of Calabrian sculptor M. Barillari from the nineteenth century. At the end of the right nave, a marble bas-relief survives from the dismantled high altar of the old rite. Flanking the current high altar are two large canvases signed by Zimatore.
