Castello Sanfelice

Castello Sanfelice is a fortress built to the dictates of its rocky foundation. Its plan is polygonal, the walls following the uneven contours of the stone beneath. The perimeter defences are severe and windowless, constructed from neatly coursed stone blocks. Access is not direct: a cobbled ramp skirts the building, leading to a lateral entrance with a round-arched doorway.

Inside, the single stone vault has been restored and consolidated. On the west wall, new floors were added in 1997, one at the piano nobile level and another above. Opposite the entrance, a small Renaissance-style loggia has been recovered. The western wall’s upper storey is pierced by four windows and small ovoid openings, a detail that lightens the fortress’s otherwise unyielding mass. This is a structure of stark military logic, softened only by a few later interventions.
