Castello-Palazzo di Capua

This is a fortress utterly isolated from the monumental complex to which it once belonged, a casualty of the provincial road that now severs it. The Castello-Palazzo di Capua makes no apologies for its solitude. It was built on a sheer rock face, a natural defence that lets it command the valleys below with a quiet, stony authority.

What remains is a study in ruin and resilience: a central tower, a bastion, and the skeletal remains of a residential palace. The castle itself is owned by the comune, but two of its outbuildings now belong to the local mountain community, where three residential units have been restored at public expense.

This is not a polished sight for a tourist brochure. It is a stubborn, fragmentary place, a reminder that many Italian fortresses were not built for postcards, but for keeping a hard-won piece of land secure.
