Castello di Maredolce

The Castello di Maredolce, also known as the Favara Palace, is a medieval building in Palermo. In the Siculo-Norman age it served as one of the ‘Solatii Regii’, the pleasure palaces of the Kings of Sicily. It stands within Favara Park, in the Brancaccio neighbourhood. The castle’s name derives from the ‘mare dolce’ (sweet sea) of its artificial lake, fed by a nearby spring. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was a royal retreat with a rectangular plan, a central courtyard and a chapel. Today, much of its original structure remains, though the lake has long since dried up.
