Castello, detto della Marchesa Adelaide

The Castello, detto della Marchesa Adelaide, stands on a height overlooking the historic centre of Susa, about 50 kilometres west of Turin, next to the celebrated Arch of Augustus. One of the oldest castles in the Val di Susa, the fortification was remodelled many times over the centuries, though recent restorations have uncovered some of its medieval features. Its name recalls Adelaide of Susa, who in the 11th century brought the ancient Segusio, surrounding lands, many Piedmontese fiefs and the Mont Cenis Pass into the orbit of the House of Savoy; in the Middle Ages the stronghold served as their fortification and residence. Following restorations, the castle reopened its museum spaces in 2017, now housing the city’s Museo Civico and the Centro di interpretazione del territorio della Val di Susa.
