Castello del Borgo

The Castello del Borgo is a compact fortress of L-shaped plan, formed by two distinct building blocks: a tower-house and a perpendicular wing. Its vertical structures are of mixed stone and pebble masonry, plastered over, while the horizontal divisions are a mix of wooden floors and vaults. The roof slopes on a wooden frame, covered with stone slabs. This is the kind of defensive architecture that speaks of a time when local lords needed to keep an eye on their lands and a hand on their strongboxes. The tower-house, a common feature of such medieval strongholds, provided both residence and lookout, while the adjoining wing suggests a gradual expansion from pure defence to more comfortable accommodation. The building stands as a solid, unpretentious piece of local history, its materials and form telling a story of practical necessity rather than grand ambition.
