Castello Caetani

Perched at the highest point of the old town, the Castello Caetani sits within the most ancient ring of walls, of which substantial traces remain. The fortress is composed of two rectangular bodies, one to the west, one to the north, linked in an L-shape around a nearly square courtyard, at whose centre rises a square tower. Only the perimeter walls survive of the original structure, built in squared limestone and cardellina of varied sizes, along with part of the old basement and the keep. Nothing remains of the horizontal structures: no beams, floors or roofs. The original western entrance is now blocked by houses built against it; the northern entrance, at the junction of the two bodies, remains, marked by a Gothic arch. It is a stern, skeletal ruin, more evocative for what it lacks than what it keeps.
