A hulking presence on the main square, this fortress anchors itself with a sheer, battered base of irregular stone blocks. Its mass is softened by windows and balconies, and most strikingly by a colonnaded loggia-belvedere that runs along the top, lending a civilised air to the martial bulk. The plan is dominated by a cylindrical corner tower, also crowned with a matching loggia, while a square tower on the western side bears a brick rose window, a probable Renaissance insertion. The main entrance still shows the slots and wooden supports for a drawbridge, a clear relic of a more guarded age. Now, the structure houses five apartments, a shop, and two storerooms, a practical reincarnation for a building that once commanded the town’s defences.
