Castellammare della Bruca

On the promontory where the Greek colony of Elea once stood, later known as Velia, the medieval fortified village of Castellammare della Bruca was built at about 71 metres above sea level. Its name, meaning ‘sea castle of the Bruca’, refers to the stronghold that dominated this rocky spur. The site preserves fragments of its medieval walls and towers, interwoven with the remains of the ancient acropolis. From here, the view stretches over the Cilento coast and the surrounding hills. The Rocca is a quiet, layered place where Greek stonework and medieval fortifications coexist, each era built upon the last, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
