At modern Casalbore, the archaeological record reveals the bones of a substantial temple, a structure whose stones speak of the shifting currents of power in ancient Italy. This was a place of worship that saw service through two distinct eras: the age of the Samnites, a fierce Italic people known for their mountain strongholds and resistance to Roman expansion, and the subsequent Roman period. The temple’s foundations and associated finds are typical of such sacred sites, which often occupied elevated positions and were adapted by successive cultures. One can imagine the rituals, first in the Oscan tongue, then in Latin, as the same gods were perhaps renamed and repurposed. The visible remnants are a quiet, stony palimpsest, layered with the ambitions and devotions of a long-vanished world. To stand there is to read a page from a history book written in broken stone and scattered pottery.
