Casa torre in Via della Torretta n.5-6

In Bari Vecchia, the medieval city core, the streets are punctuated by numerous tower-houses, a response to the need for vertical living within the tight confines of the city walls. This example, on Via della Torretta, is a solid, compact block of local stone, its quadrangolare plan rising with an unadorned, defensive purpose.

Its main facade is a study in architectural accretion. Small medieval monofores, simple, arched openings, punch through the stonework, speaking to an age of watchfulness and limited light. They are joined, in anachronistic contrast, by larger, rectangular windows from a later, more settled early modern period. The building thus becomes a vertical timeline, its fabric quietly recording the shift from a fortified medieval town to a more open, domestic urban life, all within the enduring, patient form of the tower.
