Casa-torre

In the dense, jumbled heart of an Italian hill town, this tower-house is a stubborn, four-square block of sandstone and tufo. It was built not for show, but for safety. In the medieval centuries, when civic peace was a fragile thing, such vertical strongholds were common; a family’s power was measured in storeys, not square metres. Here, the external staircase climbs the flank, leading to a door that was once well above street level, a simple defence against unwanted visitors. Inside, the original wooden beams still span the ceilings, left visible and unadorned, and the roof pitches steeply on four sides. This is a corner building, knitted into a cluster of neighbours, its rough stone walls a quiet reminder that in the medieval city, home was a fortress, and the street was a theatre of constant watchfulness.
