Casa Pennisi

In the Sicilian countryside, amid the slow geometries of field and farm track, stands Casa Pennisi, a square-built structure of mixed masonry, its presence unshowy yet deliberate. The roof, a patchwork of time and craft, is clad in traditional Sicilian tiles, coppi curved and terracotta-hued. Inside, the ceiling tells a more intricate story: part of it is a schifo (a shallow, inverted boat shape), part a padiglione (pavilion vault), while another section reveals the old technique of incannucciato, a lattice of wooden centine supporting a plaster-and-gesso skin, the cane still visible like a hidden skeleton. This is architecture that wears its construction honestly, a vernacular building where function and material shaped form. Such farmhouses, once the heart of rural estates, are now quiet monuments to a way of life that measured time by harvests and seasons, not clocks. Casa Pennisi remains, square and steadfast, a fragment of that older, slower Sicily.
