Casa natale di Papa Ganganelli (Clemente XIV)

The birthplace of Pope Clement XIV, known as Ganganelli, presents an unassuming medieval face to the street. Its brick façade bears the ghostly outlines of former round arches, hinting at earlier architectural phases now lost to time. A plastered terracotta portal marks the entrance, while inside, the main staircase continues the theme of fired clay, its steps worn smooth beneath a simple wooden balustrade.

The timber ceilings above speak to the building’s age and vernacular construction. It is in a first-floor apartment to the right that tradition places the room where the future pope was born, a modest space within what was clearly a solid, workmanlike home. The structure makes no great architectural claims; its interest lies in the quiet persistence of its materials and the chance that a boy who would wear the triple tiara once scrambled up these same terracotta stairs.
