Casa Manin

Casa Manin is a three-storey rural manor built of exposed stone, brick and rubble, its two street-facing facades telling a story of practical adaptation over centuries. The ground floor, with its wide through-passage leading to an internal courtyard, was never intended for living; the southernmost room still contains a traditional Friulian fogolar hearth, while the other chambers are notably plain. The first floor extends westwards along Via Stretta, where a room once connected to the adjoining farm buildings. Above, the granary doubled as a silkworm nursery, while a room over the passage was originally servants’ quarters. The main facade on Via della Filanda is symmetrically arranged with three tiers of aligned windows; small stone-framed openings on the ground and second floors contrast with the rectangular windows of the piano nobile. Niches for oil lamps survive. On Via Stretta, the ground-floor portals reveal the building’s chronology: a low brick arch from the 16th century survives from the original structure, while two later 18th-century doorways, a round arch and a stone-framed lintel, mark subsequent expansions.
