Casa Lucenteforte

This is a fortress, then, though one that has settled into the life of the town around it. Casa Lucenteforte is built of local limestone, its walls laid in rough, sack-masonry courses with stronger stone blocks at the corners. The plan is an irregular block, wrapped around a small courtyard, and the roof slopes in several directions, converging into a low pavilion. It rises to two floors above the ground level, which is given over to garages, a cellar, an entrance hall and a staircase. There is nothing decorative or showy here; this is a building designed for containment and security, for the storing of goods and the quiet passage of people. In Italy, such fortified townhouses are a familiar sight, their solid, unadorned exteriors speaking of a time when every urban dwelling needed to be a stronghold against the street. Casa Lucenteforte has simply endured, its stern practicality now a quiet, unassuming feature of the modern cityscape.
