Casa dei Combattenti

This structure is composed of a main volume and a smaller annexe set back on the right. The main façade’s rhythm of pilasters and a horizontal string course betrays a quiet struggle: the entrance is off-centre, and these architectural devices attempt to impose a pleasing symmetry where nature did not provide it. It is a building of many rooms, a theatre-cinema hall, a raised gallery, a stage, dressing rooms, a cloakroom, a ticket office, a projection booth, a conference room, and sundry service spaces. The type is recorded as an amphitheatre, though the notes suggest a more hybrid, indoor venue, perhaps for popular entertainment or civic gatherings. Such buildings are a familiar feature of Italian towns, adapted over centuries from Roman models of public spectacle into modern spaces for community and culture. The precise history of this particular house of combatants, however, remains in the notes as a matter of form rather than of specific event.
