Casa Calisti Coletti Fontana

A three-storey residential building of rectangular plan, its face turned towards a lane in a state of suspended collapse. The entrance is reached by an external stair, running parallel to the main façade, upon which rests a single squared-stone pillar, shouldering the overhang of the roof. The vertical structures are of load-bearing local stone, squared and worked, but now in gravely precarious static condition. The wooden floors are largely compromised; the roof, with its two pitches, still holds.

This is a fountain house, though not of the ornamental sort. Such structures were once common in Italian hill towns, serving as communal water points and modest dwellings combined. Here, the water no longer flows, and the stone pillar seems less a support than a question mark. The building endures, but only just, a stubborn, crumbling testament to vernacular architecture’s quiet dignity, awaiting either repair or the final sag of its compromised timbers.
