The Carceri Vecchie, a first-century AD elliptical mausoleum, stands on the Via Appia in the comune of San Prisco. Its popular name, meaning 'old prisons', arose from a mistaken belief that it once held gladiators for the nearby Campanian Amphitheatre. In truth, it is an imperial-era burial chamber. The structure’s upper part now serves as a chapel for the Madonna della Libera, following modifications that removed the original main entrance. This curious shift from funerary monument to place of worship gives the site an unexpected, layered history.
