C.A.R.S.I.C

At first glance, C.A.R.S.I.C looks like a Roman building that has been through the wars, and indeed, the centuries. Its plan is a composite of two distinct parts. The first is a rectangular block with an internal porticoed courtyard, rising two storeys above ground level with a semi-basement below. The second part is more closed in plan, its irregular shape a legacy of twentieth-century interventions. The masonry is laid in tidy rows of limestone and tufa, originally plastered over, suggesting a certain civic or domestic dignity. The roof combines a double-pitched slope with a terrace, a practical Roman solution to Mediterranean sun and rain. Such structures were typical of Roman urban and suburban architecture, housing everything from market activities to administrative functions. Here, the bones of antiquity are still visible beneath the later alterations, offering a quiet, unshowy lesson in how the past is never entirely erased, only built upon.
