On the Garfagnana flank of the Apuane Alps, at 720 metres, Trassilico commands a long view across to Monte Forato and the Pania della Croce. This is a village of the ridge, a borgo di crinale that once spoke to the Versilia and Castelnuovo by ancient mule-tracks. Now a single asphalted road, laid in the late twentieth century, winds up from Gallicano to reach it.
The medieval plan persists, though centuries have left their mark. At the summit, the rocca still anchors the old nucleus, with buildings fanning out along the contours, their entrances set at different levels to follow the slope. An eighteenth-century expansion, from piazza San Rocco to the church of Santa Elisabetta, is more orderly: houses line the main street, via Vallisneri, with a greater regularity of roofline. The two fabrics sit side by side, one steep and organic, the other composed, telling the story of a place that grew slowly, on its own difficult terms.
