Sillico, a medieval borgo in the Garfagnana region of Tuscany, perches on an Apennine spur above the Serchio valley. Its name, sometimes given as Silice, hints at a stony foundation. This was Norman territory once, and the strategic value of the place is immediately obvious: the views sweep across much of the Garfagnana and the upper Serchio valley, a natural watchtower over the surrounding hills.

The village clings to its ridge on a northeast-southwest axis, entered from either its upper or central parts. Inside, a fan of steep, narrow lanes links the huddle of stone houses, climbing toward the summit where fragments of the old defensive tower remain. As a 19th-century observer noted, the direct internal streets are so precipitous they feel like a laborious staircase, while winding side alleys lead everywhere. The urban plan has survived almost unchanged from the Middle Ages, with later centuries only lightly layering over the original layout. No recent expansion has disturbed the ancient form: Sillico remains a remarkably intact fragment of its past.
