At the heart of the Sacro Monte di Varallo, the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta presides over a landscape that is equal parts art, nature and devotion. This is the most important of the pre-Alpine Sacri Monti, a series of devotional complexes where chapels and sanctuaries were woven into the hillside to create a kind of theatrical, sacred narrative. Here, the natural setting was consciously designed as a Renaissance garden, with native and exotic plants arranged to frame the architecture, not merely surround it. Though centuries of gradual abandonment have softened the human hand, the forest has slowly reclaimed its ground; over four hundred species of flora have now been identified. Among them are a striking organ-pipe beech grove and ancient specimens of box, yew and field elm. The birdlife, typical of the premontane zone, is unremarkable, subdued by the enduring human presence. A protected area since 1980, the site is now part of a network of Sacri Monti linked by ancient walking routes across Piedmont and Lombardy.
