balneum

A Roman balneum in Italy. These were small-scale bathhouses, distinct from the vast public thermae, often serving a private villa or a small neighbourhood. The typical structure included a sequence of heated rooms, cold plunges and exercise spaces, a ritual of cleansing and social life that was central to Roman daily routine.
