The Antico Palazzo Consolare Avanzi is a fragment, a stubborn architectural survivor in the zone of Castello al Monte. It faces the piazzale before the Torre degli Smeducci, and what stands today is merely what remains of the original Palazzo Consolare. The building is a single, trapezoidal block of masonry; along its western flank, a small rectangular henhouse, roofed in sheet metal, has been awkwardly attached, a domestic improvisation that speaks of later centuries and more prosaic needs.
Such palazzi were once the seats of communal power, built to project civic pride and authority. Here, only the core endures, stripped of its former grandeur, yet its stubborn geometry and stone walls still hold the memory of a more formal age. The resulting ensemble is oddly compelling: a stoic ruin, a henhouse, and the silent testimony of time.
