At Abbazia S. Maria, restoration has brought every part of the complex back into clear, legible order. The monastery presents a forward-facing main block, with two ample courtyards entered through distinct portals. One, plainly religious, leads directly into the church; the other, monumental, with a pointed arch, is the oldest official entrance to the whole ensemble. This hierarchy of thresholds, sacred and civic, is a reminder that medieval monasteries were often places of both worship and worldly business.
The main block rises several storeys, with a characteristic longitudinal gallery distributing the interior spaces above. The upper floors are reached by a staircase near the church entrance, while the ground-floor rooms open directly onto the street. The plan is rectangular, buildings ranged around two internal cloisters or courtyards, with the church set to the south. It is a rational, self-contained arrangement, a small world ordered around its own quiet, sunlit courts.
