The Walls of Dion enclose an ancient settlement in the Dion-Olympos Municipality of Pieria, on the border between Macedonia and Thessaly. Built and rebuilt across the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique periods, these ruins trace centuries of shifting fortune. The ramparts guarded a sanctuary and town of deep mythological weight, remembered as the place of Orpheus' death and burial. In the Roman Imperial era the city was elevated to Colonia Iulia Augusta Diensium, a status its fortifications still silently reflect. Walking the remains today, you read layer upon layer of Greek and Roman history.
