Trapouria

Τραπουριά

On a low rocky hill above the chapel of Agios Demetrios, in the Trapouria district of eastern Attica, stand the scant remains of a ruined tower. The site lies south of the town of Kalyvia and east of the seaside settlement of Olympos. The tower is ancient in origin, though it clearly remained in use during later periods, since a medieval settlement once occupied the hill. At some distance around the tower, traces of a fortification wall survive, likely also ancient. Beyond this, little is known: the archive records no further details about either the tower or the medieval village. Today the structure is reduced to a few crumbling stones, a quiet relic of successive occupations on an otherwise unremarkable rise, with the chapel below serving as the only enduring landmark. The site offers a fragmentary glimpse of a defensive post that watched over this corner of Attica across the centuries.
