Towers

Πύργοι, Φλαμοχώρι, Λακωνία

The towers of Flomochori in the Mani peninsula are exceptional examples of defensive housing dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The most impressive is the Tower of Panteleakos, 18.5 metres high with five storeys. Construction began in 1810 and was completed in 1835, as recorded by dates carved into the cornerstones of each floor. The courtyard contains a bread oven and a cistern, ensuring autonomy during a siege. The tower’s height and strategic position within the settlement attest to the power of the Panteleakos family, one of the oldest in the area. Tradition holds that during preparations for the 1821 Revolution, local captains of Prosiliaki Mani met here with Theodoros Kolokotronis to discuss the organisation of the struggle. Among the many notable churches are Agios Asomatos (late 13th century), Anikos (Agios Nikon) with embedded marbles from an ancient sanctuary, and the cross-in-square church of Agia Kyriaki with fine frescoes.
