Tomb of Philip II

Τάφος Φιλίππου Β΄, Αιγές, Ημαθία

Beneath the fields of Vergina, in the heart of Imathia, lies the ancient city of Aigai, the first capital of Macedon. Here, in 336 BC, Philip II was assassinated in the theatre, and his son Alexander the Great was proclaimed king. The great tumulus shelters the royal tombs, among them the Tomb of Philip II, discovered in 1977 and renowned for its treasures and painted facade. This is ground where the story of one of history's most extraordinary dynasties begins.
