In the Attic countryside near ancient Cholargós stands the Tholos Tomb of Acharnes, a Mycenaean beehive-shaped burial monument from the second millennium BCE. First uncovered in 1872, it is one of only four known tholoi in Attica, a rare survivor of a grand architectural tradition. Its corbelled chamber speaks to the engineering skill and ceremonial ambition of the era, when monumental tombs honored the dead and asserted the standing of communities. Later activity across classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and modern periods left its own traces, making the site a layered record of Attica's long history.
