On the coast at Vouliagmeni, the Temple of Apollo Zoster marks what was once the southern edge of the ancient deme of Aixone. The epithet Zoster, meaning girded or belted, recalls a local myth in which Apollo tied his belt at this very spot. The sanctuary's small temple, with its long, narrow cella flanked by columns, took shape in classical and Hellenistic times, and excavations in the early twentieth century brought its distinctive plan to light. A protected monument today, it rewards those who seek out the quieter traces of ancient Attica.
