On Leonidou Street in central Athens stands a Neoclassical fortification wall, a modern construction that speaks to the city's architectural development while resting on ground layered with far older significance. The surrounding area was sacred in antiquity, lying close to the Sanctuary of Kalliste, the "most beautiful lady," a precinct sometimes identified with Artemis that served worshippers along an ancient road. Traces of archaic, classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and late antique activity have been recorded here in the Melite district, so a single modern wall quietly marks centuries of continuous use.
