On a hillside near Neapoli in Lasithi, the broad stone steps of ancient Dreros rise in shallow tiers where citizens once gathered at the heart of their city. Dreros was settled by mainland Greeks in the early Archaic period, roughly contemporary with Lato and Prinias, and its agora served the community through Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman times. The site is known from a passing remark by the ninth-century Byzantine grammarian Theognostus. Excavation and restoration from 2009 to 2024 have brought these steps back into view.
