St. Andrew's Castle in Preveza is a palimpsest of empires, begun under the Ottomans in the early 1700s and enlarged during Venetian rule from 1718 to 1797. Its final major expansion came under Ali Pasha of Yanina between 1807 and 1808, the work that made it the largest of the several fortifications guarding this stretch of coast. Today the castle stands partially preserved, its layered walls a visible record of the successive powers that shaped this strategic corner of western Greece.
