At Olympia, the workshop of Pheidias offers a rare encounter with the ancient world: the actual studio of a fifth century BC master sculptor, identified by the tools, moulds and a cup inscribed with his name that were found here. Within these walls Pheidias crafted the monumental chryselephantine statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Later converted into a Christian basilica, the building stands as a quiet counterpoint to the grand temples nearby, its long life spanning archaic, classical, Hellenistic and Roman centuries.
