Sigri Castle

Κάστρο Σιγρίου

Sigri Castle stands as a modest Ottoman coastal fortress on the western peninsula of Lesvos, roughly 93 kilometres from the island’s capital, Mytilini. Built in 1757, it dates from the later years of Ottoman rule and was intended to guard this exposed stretch of shore. The structure is now in less than good condition, though its outline remains recognisable against the landscape. Its position on the peninsula suggests a practical, defensive purpose rather than any grander ambition, and the fabric reflects the straightforward military architecture of its period. Today the castle offers a quiet, weathered presence, with the sea and surrounding terrain framing what survives. It is not a sprawling complex, but a compact reminder of the island’s more recent layers of history, sitting apart from the better-known medieval fortifications elsewhere in Lesvos. For the visitor, it rewards a pause rather than a lengthy exploration.
