At Isthmia, on the narrow neck of land joining the Peloponnese to the mainland, stood a sanctuary of Poseidon, god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. Its name, Isthmia, comes from that very geography. Cult activity here dates back to around 670 BCE, and the site endured through archaic, classical, Hellenistic, late antique, and Byzantine times. The Isthmian Games, held in the god's honour, drew competitors and spectators to this place, and the foundations visible today still trace the outlines of that long sacred and athletic life.
